Some people believe that Steve Young is a lucky man. He inherited the reigns of the 49ers from Joe Montana and reaped the benefits. However, that severely undermines the true talent of the man. Whether one likes it or not Steve Young revolutionized the role of the quarterback. Not only was he a great passer, but he was a great runner who improvised when there was no open receiver and would get crucial first downs. That’s one critical factor people forget. He did have great receivers, but that added element he brought was what made the 49ers so feared. He brought a dimension that Joe Montana never brought. Joe Montana was one of the greatest passers the league has ever seen but he was never that mobile. Steve Young brought that new element to the 49ers as well as being a great passer. Steve Young was blessed with receivers like John Taylor, Jerry Rice, and Brent Jones. However, Steve Young often made incredible passes to those receivers. Yeah, like Jerry Rice was never double covered? Steve Young threw passes to Rice as well as others in double coverage completing the vast majority of them. The Super Bowl victory over San Diego showed the world how dominant the 49ers and Steve Young really were. The Chargers were overmatched from the beginning by Steve Young and his 49ers. Even though the Niners failed to score without Jerry Rice on the field, Steve Young proved he was more than capable of using other receivers in racking up over 40 points that day. It’s still alright in my book. Look at the league right now. Many teams try to incorporate the philosophy of a good passer who can bring that added dimension of playmaking ability. It’s the new craze! Donovan Mc Nabb, Daunte Culpepper, Kordell Stewart. Oh, I’m sorry I promised to never bring him up. But everyone knows Stewart can’t throw. Which leads to another question why do you draft Tee Martin when you have Kordell Stewart? They are the same exact player. Anyway, whether you agree or not Steve Young will be a Hall of Fame quarterback in a couple of years. His impact on the league will be felt for years.
